PING PONG POOL

Optical Animal was invited by the Mondrian South Beach to design a digitally driven, interactive experience to be shared throughout a string of parties the hotel was hosting during the week of Art Basel.
We were immediately drawn to the hotel's 90-foot rainbow shaped pool as a potential projection mapping surface, and as a focal point for the project.
Needing to transform the pool into a surface that could be illuminated, we suggested filling the pool with enough ping pong balls to create a screen.
250,000 ping pongs, 5 projectors, and 120 minutes of new original content later, we were thrilled to bring Ping Pong Pool to the Mondrian.
A video recap of the installation went viral, gaining 60M+ views (and counting!) across various social media platforms. All of the ping pong balls were cleaned and put into storage, and continue to periodically find their way out again and into pools across the country, for various happenings, events, summer pool parties, and re-imaginings of the project.
